At the root of Our Cause is the quest for a healthier lifestyle. When it comes to the food we ingest, healthier eating has never been a hotter topic. Foodies want to know that their dinner came from a local farm. Mothers look for specific labels that signify a freshness or nutritional value. Older folks might care more about specific content such as fat or sodium or sugar. You might care about all of the above.
In 2013, Whole Foods declared that its stores would be completely free of GMO ingredients by 2018. Since then, its revenues have grown 35+%, it has become the 9 th largest grocer in the U.S., and it was purchased in 2018 by Amazon, the 3 rd largest market capitalized company in the world (2018). The butterfly label that denotes that a product is Non-GMO Project Verified is now on 40,000+ packages, and there are more than 2,000 non-GMO product launches a year (according to Progressive Grocer, PR Newswire, Non-GMO Project, various annual reports). Indeed, the butterfly has become ubiquitous to the natural food movement.
In 2015, Michelle Obama’s signature “Let’s Move!” campaign spurred the FDA to ban all food manufacturers from using partially hydrogenated oils (mostly soybean oil). Heart disease is still the number one killer in the U.S., but thanks to diet awareness, it is in decline. Riding this wave, in 2018 the World Health Organization launched an initiative called REPLACE for the global elimination of trans fat in foods by 2023.
Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to lead the world in the rate of obesity, and that rate continues to increase annually.
These are not new issues. Our grandchildren will grapple with these issues. What has changed is society’s enlightenment. Never before have we been so intellectually curious about where our food comes from, how it’s produced, what is its nutritional value, how many miles did it travel, what is the caloric and fat content? And never before has this information been so accessible. Transparency, we agree, is the friend to both the consumer and the supplier.
Our Cause will be a small part of this national movement, but it will be meaningful to Missouri communities and farmers. Our natural processing of soybeans will provide the most nutritious soybean meal that you can feed your livestock, and as SOYLEIC™ comes on board, our High Oleic oil will rank among the healthiest oils available to the consumer.
Better nutrition, healthier eating, this is Our Cause, and now you are invited to join us.
